On a rain-soaked afternoon in Warrenpoint, Armagh City finally secured their first win of the season after a thrilling 5–3 comeback victory.
The game began in difficult conditions, with heavy wind and rain making possession hard to control. Warrenpoint started strongly and took the lead inside ten minutes, a back-post header from a corner breaking the deadlock. Midway through the half, the hosts doubled their advantage from the penalty spot, leaving Armagh facing an uphill battle.
However, the response was immediate. Ten minutes before the interval, Igor chased down a loose ball in the corner and cleverly flicked it inside to Geraghty, who was brought down in the box. Igor stepped up to convert the penalty, giving Armagh a lifeline at 2–1 heading into half time.
The second half saw a revitalised Armagh come out with purpose and control. Dominating possession, they soon drew level when Ethan Doogan-Ballantine rifled a superb volley from the edge of the box into the bottom corner. At 2–2, the visitors looked in command, but a misplaced pass handed Warrenpoint a chance against the run of play, and a powerful strike from distance restored their lead at 3–2.
Armagh refused to fold. Ben Mullen rose highest to head home and level the score again, before Conor Mullen fired Armagh in front for the first time with just 12 minutes to play. With momentum firmly on their side, Marc McConnell caused constant problems down the left, stretching Warrenpoint’s back line.
As Warrenpoint pushed for an equaliser the Armagh defence had shut up shop and showed them no way through, Then Armagh pressed high and forced another breakthrough. A goal-bound effort was blocked by a Warrenpoint arm, resulting in the third penalty of the match. Igor Rutkowski calmly slotted home his second of the day to seal a memorable 5–3 victory and Armagh’s first three points of the season.
This win was built on resilience, energy from the bench, and a refusal to give in when the game looked to be slipping away. Hard work, hunger, and desire carried Armagh City over the line – and with their first victory now secured, confidence will surely grow for the weeks ahead.
Next up for Armagh City is Fivemiletown United in the Mid Ulster Cup on Tuesday night at Holm Park.
