Featured Game: West End Hibs 1–2 Armagh City U21s
On Saturday, our Under 21s made the trip to Dungannon to take on a strong and physical West End Hibs side in the Mid Ulster Shield — and what followed was a pulsating, hard-fought encounter that showcased every ounce of determination and teamwork this young City squad has.
The opening stages saw both teams feeling each other out, battling for territory and control. The first 15 minutes were finely balanced, with neither side able to carve out a clear chance. With a few regulars unavailable, City called upon several talented players from the Under 18s squad to step up — and they did just that, matching the intensity of the occasion from the first whistle.
After a tense opening 25 minutes, the breakthrough finally came — and it was pure quality from City. Starting deep in their own half, a composed passage of play from the back saw the ball worked up the field to Abner on the edge of the box. With one swift touch to set himself, he unleashed a low, drilled strike into the far corner, leaving the West End keeper rooted to the spot. A superb finish and a deserved 1–0 lead for Armagh!
The goal lifted City’s confidence, and although both sides continued to battle fiercely, the defences stood firm. The final 15 minutes of the first half were tight and tactical, with neither side giving an inch — every challenge fought for, every second ball contested.
The second half started with West End Hibs coming out with real intent, piling on the pressure in search of an equaliser. Armagh’s back line were immense — throwing themselves in front of everything, blocking, tackling, and clearing their lines. Jamie and Ethan put their bodies on the line before both were forced off after heavy challenges, replaced by Darragh and Fareed, who slotted in seamlessly to continue the fight.
City appeared to have weathered the storm, but West End eventually found a way through and Patrick Molloy was in the right place for the ball to deflect into the City net 1-1.
But Armagh weren’t about to let their hard work go to waste. Just five minutes later, they hit back in style. From a corner, the ball broke kindly for Aydon, who showed great composure to fire under the keeper and restore City’s lead at 2–1. The response of true champions.
From there, West End threw the kitchen sink at Armagh in the closing stages, launching waves of attacks and winning several late corners. Kalin came off the bench to provide fresh legs in defence, and every single player in blue dug deep, clearing danger after danger.
Then came that moment — and it was nothing short of spectacular. With just five minutes left on the clock, Jason produced an unbelievable double save — the first a lightning reflex stop, the second a miraculous follow-up while still on the ground. But he wasn’t finished there. Moments later, West End looked certain to score from six yards out — until Jason pulled off what can only be described as a Peter Schmeichel-style save of the season. From the sidelines, no one could tell if it hit his face, shoulder, or glove — but everyone knew one thing: it didn’t hit the net!
In the dying minutes, West End launched a barrage of corners, but City’s defence stood tall, clearing everything in sight until the referee’s whistle confirmed a famous 2–1 victory.
It was a brilliant game of football, played in great spirit by both sides — a true test of character that saw our young Armagh side come out on top through grit, teamwork, and sheer heart.
Best of luck to West End Hibs for the rest of their season — and massive congratulations to our U21s for another outstanding performance in the Mid Ulster Shield.
